Mooring whips on the dock?

I will be securing our new Aqua Patio to a single sided not floating dock (very secure). I've seen mooring whips around the lake & am quite surprised at the expense. What little research I have done indicates that keeping the boat "off the dock" is the best way to prevent damage and keep wear to a minimum. I have bumpers and ability to secure cleats wherever I need them. Thanks for your input.

If you lay 4 to 5, 8" bumpers along side of dock, I don't see you needing whips.
I lay 4 between boat and slip does a great job protecting as I enter slip and when she is docked.
